paper positions berlin 2024 – Solo Show
The time-consuming process of creating paper stems from the artistic interest in transformation. A work that has to be created step by step and gives the material the opportunity to create itself, giving it a spontaneity. This temporal component is also reflected in the processing of painful pasts, trauma and the artist’s own history, which finds expression in the form of abstract images.
Through drawing on paper, Iranian artist Asareh Akasheh began to produce paper himself approximately six years ago. Her understanding of the usual appearance and form of paper broadened: Color pigments and various plant fibers (cotton, abaca, kozo, etc.) were considered as a field of exploration. They become part of the composition, leaving behind structures and color gradients. They are traces of something already existing which is becoming something new. The works thus form a contrast to the modern, fast-moving digital world and at the same time combine old, traditional techniques with contemporary art practice.
